Browsers: The Mozilla Foundation has issued a notice stating that version 1.5 of its yearling Firefox Web browser will be available for download this afternoon at www.getfirefox.com and www.mozilla.com. This latest incarnation brings a better system for software updates, faster navigation, new support for Web standards, as well as more effective pop-up blocking.
Open source: According to a study by OSDL, users and peers are leading firms to consider giving Linux a home in their desktop PCs. Dave Rosenberg, the report's author, lists the top 3 reasons for deploying Linux, as well as the top 3 inhibitors, in Open Resource, and promises to reveal even more tomorrow.
Columnists' Corner: Ever seen Joan of Arc tiptoeing around your IT shop at midnight in a leather jacket? Me neither. But our IT Off the Record writer sure has, only her name was Mary and she helped users and IT alike circumvent a "state-of-the-art software and security management system" that had programmers spending three-quarters of their time tracking down signatures from HR, data-entry clerks and various personnel, all of whom had to approve what the programmers had done.
The news beat: Anti-offshoring legislation heats up, with lobbyists calling for severe limits or an end to offshoring practices. The city of New Orleans will provide free Wi-Fi based largely on donated equipment. And the merger of T-Mobile and Deutsche Telecom has been put on hold by a court maintaining that the companies must first resolve shareholder's complaints.
