Talkback: what is Web 2.0?

IT dignitaries discussing Web 2.0 in the enterprise during a panel session Wednesday debated, for starters, what exactly Web 2.0 is and then pondered where it is headed.

Jeff Nolan, director of the Apollo Strategy Group at SAP Ventures, covered the topic at an IBDNetwork event, where he said: "The hardest thing about it is actually nailing down [what Web 2.0 is]."

They've had their stab at it. Now's your turn, Web developers and watchers.

Talk back to us below.

Web 2.0 is the next generation in which everything will be hosted.

Web 2.0, all I read here is new lectures about old stuff.

Seriously, one could better urge MS to update their IP configs to the latest IP versions and then one could talk about Web 2.0.

Web 2.0 is a myth created by one blogger, and now it is fashionable to talk about it.

Don't overestimate the power of a single blogger is what I say.

Web 2.0 is not limited to AJAX and Flash, but it is the incoming tech wave that is moving the Internet to data driven applications that will rival your desktop applications, but at a lower cost. (Actually, the technology has been around for a while and is here to stay)

For people to dismiss the technology could be a mistake, it could have the affect that Java has had on the industry. So it is worth investigating and building applications to understand the capabilities of the technology.

I was a little shocked that the SAP person dismissed the technology. What is their plan for the next release of MySAP? They should be discussing AJAX to see if it is a fit. But oh well.

I don't see the problem with cross browser support for web based applications. It is really a non-issue in my eyes.

If you are building a web-site open to the public, and using AJAX, Flash, or other Web 2.0 technologiesw, then it would be a problem.

But for an application(for a fee) you should not worry about it.

btw, who came up with the name Web 2.0? I don't like the moniker. It sounds like marketing hype.
