Microsoft is expected to announce late Wednesday that when it rolls out Service Pack 2 for Office in the first half of next year, support for ODF and PDF will, at long last, be included. Related: Office 2007: The killer app ... for Mac users.

Red Hat updates its enterprise Linux for servers and desktops. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2 brings virtualization, power management, and clustering enhancements, while the desktop edition includes updated graphics drivers and a refresh of desktop applications.

Open source CRM vendor SugarCRM launches a datacenter edition that enables customers to tailor and manage instances for different business units, and partners to more easily customize the software and sell it in the on-demand fashion.

AMD says it will use Qimonda memory with its upcoming GPU for higher data rates and lower power consumption.

Codie awards go to Adobe, Red Hat. Indeed, familiar and lesser-known names alike pepper this year's winner's circle, compiled by the Software & Information Industry Association.

And Cringely poses a question: Is having a small portion of the 'Net closed to Google such a horrible thought? That piece, of course, would be Facebook -- if the rumors that Microsoft is gaga over the social networking site have any legs. "Yes, the sky appears to be in free fall."
