Team System for DBAs First Look

I got a copy of the new VS Team System for DBAs at TechED last week and went to install it this evening. The install went flawlessly... that is, until I went to run it. There's just nothing there. I see the documentation in the Visual Studio program menu, but nothing else indicates that the product was installed.

I went to repair the install, and the first step is to install windows installer 3.1, which it can't find on the CD. I downloaded and installed it manually. The install program still insisted on trying to install it and failed. I searched the CD and couldn't find the .exe either, so at least it's not lying.

I can uninstall it just fine. I ran the uninstall, rebooted, and installed from scratch again. I find it worth mentioning that windows installer 3.1 isn't part of the base install for some reason, just the repair/reinstall. So, again it installed without issue and completed just fine. I rebooted for completion's sake and again, there was nothing there.

Once I get this worked out I'll let you guys know more about what it's like to work with and how well MS is answering our real problems in code management.

Hi, I'm the test manager for Team Data and I own the setup program.

The reinstall problem is something I missed and I'm working on getting an updated download on our team site that has the issue fixed (as well as make the download a self-extracting file vs. an ISO image).

As for the product not working, I have some questions to help determine the root cause:

1) What SKU of Visual Studio 2005 do you have installed?

The Team Data CTP3 setup doesn't install Visual Studio 2005. I have a work item to add detection of Visual Studio 2005 to the setup but was not able to get it in for CTP3.

For RTM, Visual Studio 2005 Professional will be on the media and can be installed as the first step from the setup program.

Team Data CTP3 will work with Visual Studio Professional, any Team Edition (Architect, Developer, Test), or Team Suite.

2) Presuming you have a supported Visual Studio 2005 SKU installed, do you have SQL Express installed and running?

Team Data CTP3 requires SQL Express for validation of the T-SQL files used in the database project.

I'd like to make sure you are able to succesfully install and use the product. Please feel free to call or email me and I'll check back in case you post a reply.

Thanks,
