Doing hard time in writer's jail
Blogging has been relatively light these past few weeks -- a heavy travel schedule combined with a general surge in business activity has kept me busy with little time to reflect in this space. Writing is difficult work, especially if you have a weekly deadline to fulfill like I do with my InfoWorld column. Writing a column for print is uniquely challenging because space constraints mean that sometimes you have to cut a word here and there to make it fit properly, or add a sentence of a certain length. I can spend hours staring at a single sentence trying to craft it to deliver the intended meaning more clearly. Writing is hard work, verging on absolutely maddening at times.
Former President Bill Clinton emerged recently from the completion of his memoirs and referred to the confinement of his writing deadline as "writer's jail." I don't think I've heard such an apt phrase to refer to how I feel when I'm writing my weekly column (and a Google search suggests that the term "writer's jail" is a Clinton invention).
Nice term, President Clinton. I feel your pain.

Does IT matter?
Nicholas Carr of "IT Doesn't Matter" fame is out with his new book, "Does IT Matter?" I actually have a print column in the hopper (to be published on Friday at 3pm PT) that references Carr's book in passing as just another indicator of what I'm calling "IT fatigue." I'm currently reading the book and expect to comment on it in more detail in a later column. In the meantime, Harvard Business School's Working Knowledge site has
posted an excerpt from Carr's new book. I think it's the duty of every CTO to read this book. Judging from the original essay and my progress through the new book so far, the title is a lot more provocative than the content. Bob Metcalfe was definitely right when
he said that Carr "has succeeded in misleading the vast majority of
Harvard Business Review readers who read only the titles," but I'm hoping some of those title-readers will eventually engage in an informed debate.
One issue that consistently rears its head in these discussions is IT commoditization, something I discussed just over a month ago in my InfoWorld column:
. . . . the idea that IT has been commoditized seems almost laughable. I would argue that, overall, IT commodification is a purely humorous proposition until IT project success rates consistently close in on 100 percent. As one CTO noted, despite the simplification of certain aspects of IT, it's still miles away from the point where setting up a content management or CRM system is as simple as setting up a kitchen appliance, despite what big vendor ads in the Wall Street Journal might suggest. Each IT environment is different, and the existence of cheap commodity servers and other hardware doesn't mean that IT strategy is any easier.
A CTO might assemble a complex system out of commodity parts, but the intelligence and technical insight that goes into building systems that serve business needs will never be a commodity. By the time a technical solution is commodified, the CTO has already moved on to the next difficult technical problem that has no commodity solution. That's what CTOs do: attack the tough problems. Until tough problems go out of fashion, the CTO will remain on the front lines of business.
After that column, I got an e-mail from Dr. Al Erisman (used with permission here), who said what I was trying to say more elegantly and concisely.
On the issue of commoditization, you rightly separated the commoditization of components and of systems. Today's systems may become tomorrow's components. So the march of commoditization is a very real thing. But...we never get to the end of this. Because the march to commoditization actually enables us to build things that in the past would have been far too difficult. Now, built from higher level parts, we can tackle what was once a dream. Those that believe the entire IT system will be commoditized just don't understand the challenge, and the business benefit, from putting together ever more integrated, strategic systems.
Beneath all the "IT doesn't matter" hype, there's the notion that IT is already a utility and you just plug things in and they work -- not true. In my mind, the ubiquity of IT shouldn't be confused with overall IT stability any more than the ubiquity of banking systems should be confused with making money. In both cases, good management matters more than anything.
All that being said, I think those IT proponents who enter the debate should definitely read Carr's book before getting into a red-faced rage because his view is more balanced than the title suggests. On page xiii of the preface, Carr says one thing that sticks in my mind throughout the book: "Indeed, as the strategic value of the technology fades, the skill with which it is used on a day-to-day basis may well become even more important to a company's success." I think a lot of IT people felt as if Carr's writing was a personal attack on their careers, but this one sentence tells me that regardless of whether servers and routers "matter," the skill needed to run those things isn't likely to go out of style any time soon.

For those about to blog, we salute you
In my InfoWorld column this week ("
Blogging behind the firewall"), I write about a small but really amazing outpouring of information-sharing in InfoWorld's IT department since we started a group weblog a few months ago. After I filed my column, I came across a Jon Udell column ("
Publishing a project weblog") on roughly the same subject (with slight differences which I'll get to in a moment) -- about a year ahead of me, as Jon tends to be. In my experience so far, weblogs work best as documentation repositories in the spirit of what Scott Ambler has written about as "
agile documentation," a concept I also
discussed recently.
Scoble wonders what we write about in our internal InfoWorld weblog. Here are a few recent headlines to posts with some background info in parentheses:
- Vacation - IT staff (a scintillating view into the summer vacation schedule for InfoWorld's IT staff)
- Long-term equipment plan (5-year plan for Test Center capital spending)
- FY 05 Capital budget planning (our purchase plans for web site scaling, desktop/laptop replacements, etc. for next fiscal year)

That last item, while the least related to IT operations, actually might be the most important post in our weblog because it illustrates how weblogs can transcend the dryness of "knowledge management." Traditional documentation is never fun, but weblogs often are. Traditional documentation rarely (if ever) reflects the spirit of your workplace or the personalities of the people who make IT happen everyday, but the weblog medium leaves itself open to more looseness and real humanity, which is what
well-functioning teams are all about. If I was reading a traditional piece of documentation and the author placed a picture of Wade rocking out on guitar in the middle of it, it would seem out of place, but on our internal weblog, which is about real people, it makes total sense.
I've always heard that running IT is about three key things: people, process, and technology. Process and technology have always been part of the discussion, but weblogs really help bring the people forward -- not to mention some solid guitar chops.

IMAP and protocol sniffing
My recent columns (
here and
here) about struggling with various combinations of the Treo 600, Notes, and Outlook using IMAP clients spurred some very practical reader feedback, a lot of it focused on my reference to protocol sniffing -- something that perhaps shouldn't be a last resort as I described in my column:
The next step is setting up a protocol sniffer to see what's really going on at the lowest level, even though everyone knows that pulling out the protocol sniffer is the IT equivalent of the 99-yard Hail Mary pass with no time on the clock.
In my experience at least, command line protocol sniffers can be hard to use if you don't use them regularly (I've always struggled with
ethereal and
tcpdump for some reason).
Bill Campbell of Celestial Systems turned me on to
tcpflow, a protocol sniffer that can be used to debug IMAP and anything else that transmits data via a TCP connection. I found it to be immediately useful.
The tcpflow man page explains how it works:
tcpflow is a program that captures data transmitted as part of TCP connections (flows), and stores the data in a way that is convenient for protocol analysis or debugging. A program like tcpdump(4) shows a summary of packets seen on the wire, but usually doesn't store the data that's actually being transmitted. In contrast, tcpflow reconstructs the actual data streams and stores each flow in a separate file for later analysis. tcpflow understands TCP sequence numbers and will correctly reconstruct data streams regardless of retransmissions or out-of-order delivery.
I decided to run tcpflow on my Iaptop to see the IMAP conversation on port 143 (sniffing the wireless interface on my PowerBook) -- very easy to read the output:
