Endless Vistas

I had to share the latest Vista error message. After clicking on Help from within the Palm conduit software, this popped up:

------------------------------

Why can't I get Help from this program?

The Help for this program was created in Windows Help format, which was used in previous versions of Windows and it is not supported in Windows Vista.

For more information, see Windows Help program (WinHlp32.exe) is no longer included with Windows on the Microsoft support website.

------------------------------

Now really. How hard would it have been to include support for the old help format?

I can only guess that it is security related; no chance of finding future weaknesses or exploits in the Windows Help format if they simply remove it.

In security speak, the cost to you (frustration) is an "externality" to Microsoft

With Vista, Microsoft has all but abandoned their own mobile devices earlier than Mobile 5, as I found out the hard way when it renamed my Pocket PC v. 4.2 device, unregistered WorldMate and will no longer convert Pocket Word Or Excel files.

Active Sync, which does the file conversions is not used by Vista; instead, Vista uses Windows Mobile Device Console, which does no conversions, since Mobile 5, or is it 6, now use the native file formats found in Office 2007. So those of use still using earlier Microsoft mobile OSs are SOL.

Three books. Three ways to change the world, your life, or at least Bob Lewis' bank account.

Leading IT: The Toughest Job in the World distills the world of IT leadership into eight learnable skills and gives you concrete, practical techniques for each one of them.

Bare Bones Project Management: What you can't not do makes project management manageable, even for first-time project managers with no formal training in the discipline.

ManagementSpeak: What managers say/What they mean … well, it won't help your career, and won't make you a better manager. Mostly, it will make you chuckle, guffaw, and maybe even chortle. Make friends - it's the perfect gift for anyone who has ever suffered through one of those meetings.
