Microsoft: "We don't compete with open source"
From the "this is so 2003 category" Microsoft's Martin Gregory seems to be oblivious to what the rest of the company is thinking. Microsoft is pretty aware they are competing with open source products. It's even in their financial filings.
Best quote from the interview: "Microsoft is about value for money."
Number one, we don't compete with open source...as a development model or a technology model. We may compete with some of the products that fall out the end of that process.Number two, the change that you've seen over the last 12-24 months is the commercialisation of open source. Sure, Linux is free to anyone who cares to download it, but to really deploy it in a company, you are going to go to Novell or Red Hat and pay for support. Those providers are interested in profit, shareholders, investment, and revenue streams.
Number three, if nothing else, Microsoft is about value for money and best fit for purpose. So, pick the best tools for the job. If there's a product out there that's lowest cost, most secure and more reliable, that's the thing you should be using.
It's no fun when they make it this easy.
