Oracle to launch Linux flavor?
The Financial Times reports that Oracle is contemplating owning a Linux variant to own the whole stack.
"I'd like to have a complete stack," he said. "We're missing an operating system. You could argue that it makes a lot of sense for us to look at distributing and supporting Linux.""Now that Red Hat...competes with us in middleware, we have to re-look at the relationship - so does IBM," he said.
On Red Hat's growing influence and its ambitions to reach beyond the Linux operating system, he added: "I don't think Oracle and IBM want another Microsoft in Red Hat."

Ellison also said that they might acquire Novell as a way to expand into the Linux operating system business and to increase Oracle's presence in the rapidly growing open source software market.
I do not think that Oracle is likely to acquire Novell at least not at in the immediate future. This looks more like posturing aimed at Red Hat, which now competes more directly with Oracle as a result of the JBoss acquisition. I also think that Novell is still assimilating SUSE and other open source acquisitions making them a difficult company to acquire.
In reality, who knows what will happen in this unpredictable M&A environment. If my years of experience in the technology industry have taught me anything, it is that Larry Ellison is not predictable.
