Java to go GPL
OSDir (and others) is reporting that Java is prepared to go GPL in the very near future, starting with the mobile and standard editions. This is welcome news, Sun, and a continued testament that Sun is one of the few BigCo's that really gets open source.

Good on Sun. Talk about making all the right moves... I wonder if they'll relicense Solaris under GPL.
Posted by: Innocent Observer at November 9, 2006 09:20 AMI agree, good for Sun and Java going GPL. However, I think the jury is still out on whether this open source strategy which Sun is pursuing will ultimately pan out and save the company. I am pulling for them, but the verdict is not yet in.
Posted by: alan shimel at November 9, 2006 09:52 PMI am not sure why GPL is considered good for Java? Please explain
Posted by: dave Rosenberg at November 10, 2006 10:36 AMI'm with Dave on this one.
Why is use of the GPL good for the open sourcing of the Java SE reference implementation? With Apache Harmony around, why should we support Sun's use of the GPL for their Java SE reference implementation when we have seen how Sun works in a "community" (i.e. they seek control or they don't play).
Oh, and Sun still controls governance of the Java language & JDK (i.e. gets it in terms of keeping control over an ecosystem that many other vendors have created and kept vibrant), so open sourcing their reference implementation of a spec that they control doesn't sound like a company that 'gets it' to me.
