Lumen: Open source SaaS

Just when I finished writing about how open source licenses have little to say about SaaS, along comes Lumen with an open source SaaS platform.

Microsoft talks about Windows Live Core. Salesforce talks about Apex. But PHP applications are out there and making browsers sing right now, every day, all day. Applications are obviously moving to the web (whether as SaaS or some other trendy word). Lumen is a new entrant into the market with a
free PHP app server that is used to make commercial and open source SaaS (web applications).

From its press release:

Lumen’s SaaS platform is in use by more than 200 commercial customers with over 150,000 users of on-demand applications....Lumenation is the industry’s first PHP platform to focus on SaaS developers, making PHP an effective alternative to proprietary SaaS development platforms such as Saleforce’s AppSpace and Microsoft’s Live Core....

In March, market analyst firm IDC released a survey of over 1,000 small- to medium-sized businesses, in which between five and 15 percent said they were considering adopting a SaaS solution in the next 12 months.

This sounds very cool to me - particularly the commercial traction - but I do have to wonder how this differs from ActiveGrid, which at one point billed itself as the PHP application server. And it will be especially interesting to see how companies like Bungee Labs compete with Lumen for developer mindshare.

Most interesting of all, however, is how Lumen and others will wed open source with SaaS. Not the "wedding" that consists of lots of Web 2.0 companies pilfering open source and giving nothing back (or comparatively nothing). But true SaaS companies also existing as true open source companies. Lumen seems to be doing this well today. It's the exception.

I have installed Lumen products at the Institute where I serve as the CIO. The framework is extremely powerful and Lumen has developed a rich set of applications to go along with it. Support is excellent. I plan to use their product in a number of areas.

As a member of the educational community our district has experienced several changes in technology over the past several years. Teachers, administrators, students, parents all need to have access to real time data and applications. Having a variety of platforms and applications can be a nightmare in compatibilty and training. Our solution is to be as web-based as possible. Lumen has provided us with a way to combine all the different sources for applications and data onto one desktop that can be customized for the particular group of users. Parents can easily find everything they need, teachers now have one location that provides them with all their requirements, administrators have the information at their finger tips. No longer does the teacher have to stop one application and go to another just to complete their daily routine. We find that our teachers have more time to teach and spend less time on tasks that take them away from the students.

I have been working with Lumen since 2001. I have two clients using the Lumen system with applications written for their needs and business process. These clients needed portability and simple user interfaces. Lumen developed and is supporting the changing needs of my clients. The clients are very happy with the results and support. It has been a pleasure to work with Lumen.

We have incorporated Lumenation in our school district. The many applications (Web based) have become intertwined with our daily functions. When you stop to think of all that we do, it is just amazes me that it all takes place with in a web browser. The information is so readily available and secure. Their product is easy to set up and easy to train users on.

The Lumen desktop within a browser window is amazing. It looks and works just like a Windows desktop. These browser desktops can be assigned to groups or individuals with access to just the applications they need. Several applications can be run simultaneously with just a click to move between them. We use several general applications like the calendar, survey, and help desk applications as well as many specifically written for schools. Also amazing is how rapidly full applications can be written and implemented within the environment. Lumen support has been excellent.

BTW, during last year we have been using this product. No words - it's good one. Also we have developed our own classes that can be used there (PDF,List Class,Edit Class, different additional abilities like LOV (lists of values), quick ajax, DB Manager).

So if you are interested in it, please let me know, and I'll help you to get them.
