Mapping the world's open source implementations

John Scott (RadiantBlue, Department of Defense) and I were IM'ing this morning, and he raised a topic that I've heard once before, but never seen implemented: a wiki/mashup/listing of all companies using open source. I think it's an excellent idea, and would go a long way toward promoting further use of open source.

Does anyone have any good ideas/infrastructure for hosting a growing list of companies using open source? Maybe it could call out the projects they're using, too? We'd still have to think through how to manage privacy concerns (obviously, no one could post a company to the list against its will), but I think it would be very powerful to have a Google map of the world, with dots showing all the places open source is being used. Mouse over a dot and see the projects that company is using.

If someone can come up with the technology for this, we've got two perfect places to host it, either one of which would work.

Isn't the assumption now that it would be easier to map companies that aren't implementing open source? (unless by 'implement' you mean 'big contract with open source company?)

That question aside, this seems like something that maybe the folks at swik.net might be interested in/able to do.

Seems like a great way to find out what your competition is doing or an even better way to find out how to compromise the company (after all if you know what software they are running you do have a better change of find backdoors in...)

How do you accept these implementations ? How could you verify that? Would it be user submited without no validation? Who could do this validation and how?

Maybe we could help programming this.

What about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Open_source_companies

What would interesting is a place to showcase great open source implementations. "Moving xyz system to open source made a real difference because....and here is what we learnt along the way..." It something we would happily put on http://www.o4b.co.nz.
