Open Source Barometer from Alfresco
Ian Howells, Doctor of Marketing over at Alfresco, has published results of a survey of their users to come up with a barometer of open source. While the sample is from Alfresco's own users (and perhaps a bit skewed), it's an interesting snapshot on how open source is being used in the mainstream. In particular, it's clear that open source co-exists with closed source in many organizations.
A few of the highlights:
-Users evaluated use of Alfresco on Windows as much as on Linux, though Windows (42%) is used more for evaluation and Linux (52%) for deployment.
-Tomcat (72%) and JBoss (20%) were the most widely used application servers, with greater adoption than closed source app servers from IBM, BEA and Sun.
-MySQL was the most widely used database, at over 60%, with Oracle (14%), SQL Server (12%) and Postgres (8%) also used.
-Firefox was the most widely used browser, with browser usage was higher than portal usage in general.
Most interesting, Alfresco will update the survey every six months, thereby going beyond just a snapshot to provide insight into adoption trends over time. You can get the full report at http://www.opensourcebarometer.org.

Zack, this data is particularly interesting in light of the type of customer that Alfresco attracts. We are predominately Global 2000 in our customer base (H&R Block, Harvard U., Airbus, etc.). These aren't Mom-and-Pop shops that have opted to use open source because it's free. Rather, these are companies that have billions to spend on IT, but are choosing open source because it's better (performance, ease of use, scalability, etc.). That's why you see such healthy uptake of MySQL with Alfresco.

We've gathered speculations and rough figures (even list of departures) for a while, but these hard(er) figures have been invaluable.
No company should ever enter a deal that puts the EU case in jeopardy, promotes a desktop monopoly (XPS, XAML, OOXML, etc), leads to unsubstantiated claims, and fuels unfounded fear.
Learn from Linspire, which is now virtually dead in the water.
The other interesting take-away is the deployment of Linux, which mind you, cannot be tracked properly. Not everyone deploys on a server that is bought. I am aware of test installation of Alfresco. It goes 'under the radar'.
