Dilbert Goes Open Source

Or at least Dilbert's boss is trying to get him to use open source software because "it's free." Click on the image below to view last Friday's cartoon at the official site.

Dilbert creator Scott Adams has long been involved in tech and has spoken at a number of open source and developer conferences including EclipseCon earlier this year. Still, it's a significant milestone to see open source in the comics. I guess it means open source is safe enough even for pointy haired bosses.

You write: "I guess it means open source is safe enough even for pointy haired bosses."; I believe conversely the comic shows that while "open source" has gained enough traction that pointy-haired bosses hear about it, Open Source is just another buzzword to them that has resonance because it's linked to that wonderful concept: "FREE"!

Nothing is free. Certainly not open source software.

Right on pm6!

"Open-source" software's freedom is suspect because "open-source" is just a marketing buzz word which even Microsoft is using.

"Free Software" is where it's at. I'm a GPL fan as you are. :)

The right to use, study, copy, modify, and redistribute is what gives real freedom.

And, if you can make some bank doing these things, then good on ya.
