Apples New iPod Touch
While this is admittedly a bit off topic from Linux ultra-portables, Apple's recently released iPod Touch is an interesting device. Its by no means a general purpose portable, but it does appear to be a pretty good "special purpose" device. For those who missed it, the iPod Touch is basically an iPhone without a phone but with built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, Safari browser, iTunes, etc. Safari is a decent browser and should enable people to access web-based email, calendar and other applications.
The iPod Touch is slightly larger than an iPod but at 2.4" x 4.3" and only .31" (8 mm) wide and weighs 4.2 oz, it's still quite small. Definitely pocketable and smaller even than the Nokia N800. Its got a 480 x 320 pixel 3.5" display which makes web browsing possible if not ideal. While it's not an open device, it is still pretty cool and good for quick browsing when you don't have a laptop with you.
The iPod Touch will be available later this month starting at $299. To me this is a much better companion device than the Palm Foleo ever could have been.

Why bother with Apple's monopoly? Once you buy an Apple, you must have iTunes. Nothing is compatible with iTunes, and nothing else is compatible with Apple. You buy an Apple and you aer married to the vendor for life. Check this iPod beater out instead. It plays much and videos, stores pictures for slideshows and handles multiple formats: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16855625005

I think the iPod touch is pretty cool too, but wonder if the Wifi stuff (minus config utilities) will be as friendly as the business traveler needs.
From the the marketing perspective I would have priced it at $100 or so and gone for total ubiquity.
Posted by: Dave Rosenberg at September 11, 2007 08:41 AMFunny how a standards-compliant web browser (in your pocket no less!) can be described as a "special purpose" device.
Basically it can let you access any web app wherever you are.
The Linux community should be ecstatic. The whole world, including my grandmother and every developing country, will be running Linux. Even if they don't know it.
We'll never have Linux on every desktop, but I can see a world with Linux in every server room and a browser in every pocket.
Posted by: aaon at September 11, 2007 08:49 AMHey CW, thanks for the plug on some substandard Chinese piece of junk, how do you get any LEGAL content on it? I am not talking about pirated stuff.
The reason why Apple is leading is because they have content, sexy products (which are actually selling for less than the competition) and the best interface out there.
I do have a Zune as well, it is decent, but no match to what Apple has. Face it, Apple has won this contest and until someone comes up with someone with a compelling product they will continue to lead.
Posted by: Mike at September 11, 2007 08:58 AMWhile I agree that Apple has a lot of momentum with iTunes and has remained closed with their DRM, it's not a one-way street. You can use MP3 files and you're fine.
I've bought maybe 6 songs from iTunes (less than the average which I read is around 24). But I've got thousands of MP3 songs that I've put on my iPod from eMusic and from ripping my own disks. So you're not married to apple with an iPod. You're only married to Apple if you buys songs on iTunes.

Posted by: ZUrlocker at September 11, 2007 10:36 AMCW is retarded. The "iPod beater" he suggested that we look at is nowhere near as good as the iPod touch. The screen resolution on the iPod is two times better than that, it has double the memory, the screen size is an inch larger, it's thinner, has longer battery life, has Wi-Fi, touchscreen, and it looks 10 times better than that piece of junk.
Posted by: Lee at September 11, 2007 11:30 AMAnyone know if you can do the following on the Ipod touch:
- Download email attachments from Safari
- transfer those attachments to a laptop via cable or bluetooth.
- What movie formats can be viewed?
- Will there be additional applications that can be downloaded in order to view PDF or excell or word files?
Posted by: apol at September 11, 2007 01:18 PMExcept for the fact that you can't enter new appointments/information into the Calendar application on-the-fly. You have to sync it at your computer, sort of negating its purpose on a portable device in the first place. Why even include the calendar app at all? Do we really need an entire app that only effectively tells us what day of the week it is?
Posted by: JMG at September 11, 2007 01:39 PMI would rather give my money to Apple then Microsoft. The entire iPod series is way better than anything other music player. iPod Touch is just another way to tell Bill Gates that he cannot own every market!
iPod Touch = Elegant and simple, yet sophisticated.
Posted by: GY at September 11, 2007 02:57 PMYou can not download attachments off of Safari therefore you can not do any of the other things.
But this item is superb!!! Everyone buy it!!!

What year do you live in??? You clearly do not know what you are talking about. Apple is compatible with a hell of a lot more than windows... hell, apple runs windows (although why would you want to).
Yes you will be married to iTunes, but why would that be a problem... It simplicity makes it by far the best media organiser out there.
Posted by: cor at September 11, 2007 05:00 PMI've been hanging out for this ever since the rumours started after the release of the iphone as I am not interested in the phone capability but the 16Gb limit is disappointing. I guess I'll have to hang on a bit longer before retiring my 40Gb iPod photo which is pretty close to full as I use it to sync the data from my work and home computers.
p.s. why do these discussions always have to break down into a Microsoft V's Apple/Linux type of thing? Are people not capable of carrying on an objective discussion of a products pros and cons any more?
Posted by: David D. at September 11, 2007 07:02 PMWow, the new iPod touch finally! I've been holding out on the iPhone cuz I really don't need a new phone (plus I'm in Canada) but the iPod touch sounds pretty sweet. I'm definitely going to get my hands on one when they are released.
Posted by: iTouch at September 11, 2007 07:34 PManybody know when apple plans on coming out with an iPod touch with bigger memory? perhaps around 30gb
Posted by: Ryan Bishop at September 11, 2007 07:39 PMIt's funny to me that people who have never "bought into Apple's monoply" can make comments about "nothing" being compatible. I guess people just enjoy a computer that makes you think harder to find out in the end you've actually created a less than superior product, document, presentation, etc.... The real question is why would ever want to spend good money on a lacking product like a PC or Vista or Vistas (home, superhome, business, professional the ultimate or whatever else they have). You see Mac is too simple for stupid people. So before you knock it, get married to a Mac and see for yourself why once you go Mac you never go back.
Posted by: Andy at September 11, 2007 08:11 PMI use an iPod with Windows. When I bought my 3G iPod a few years ago it came with MusicMatch. This was the most useless messy querky piece of crap software I ever used. When Apple announced iTunes for Windows I downloaded it the day it was released and never looked back. If I hadn't experienced MusicMatch then I'd of never appreciated iTunes so much.
The only lock in is DRM, not Apple. If Apple had their way they wouldnt even use DRM and it frustrates them just as much as customers. If you don't use DRM then you're future proof. I rip all my music into AAC (sans DRM) format. It plays on any iPod along with any other AAC-capable device (works fine on my Symbian phone too). You only get locked in if you allow corporations ran by clueless anal-retentive execs to lock you in. Shame, because I would buy all my music from iTunes if it didn't have DRM because it's so darn convenient. Especially with the iTunes Wifi Store coming out. Damn DRM.
Granted Apple are more closed than many companies, and in alot of cases this is bad for the customer (eg iPhone has no memory slot, can't switch battery, no third-party apps) but with the computers you can run Windows both native and emulated, so no lock in. You buy a Mac, and worst case scenario you end up running Windows on it.
Posted by: Ant at September 12, 2007 08:54 AMI too wanted the iPhone less the phone (I live in Baja most of the year) and here it is. I was reading all the hacks for the iPhone to get what I want and Apple delivers. Way to go Apple and yes I do run iTunes on a PC Laptop and download Podcasts. No, I can't 'squirt' anybody with this device but then again, I hear those with that capability can't find anybody to squirt anyhow unless they are walking around the Microsoft Campus.
Posted by: worn at September 12, 2007 10:38 AMIt is not a surprise, the iPhone / iPod has landed. Finally, we will be bale to experiment the fantastic iPhone interface on an iPod. It is just very unfortunate this model only comes with 16Gb storage.
Hopefully, a new model will be launched soon with a 80Gb or 160Gb hard disk....

Posted by: Gregory BIRGE at September 12, 2007 11:19 AMWhat do you mean it is not compattible? Any iPod works on a PC. I have a 60gb video and it works on my pc and I have Vista. All you have to do is download iTunes for free and it works. And so you know I 'm buying the 16gbtouch because I know that it works and I'm confident in apple's products. Just give them credit they make very high quality machinery. If you had the resources they did you ould not want somebody to go and by a pc.Also once I get my Mac again I will tell you how it is!
Posted by: Daniel Anderson Jr at September 12, 2007 01:02 PMI was all on board for the iPod touch until they took everything I needed off. No calendar, no notes, no bluetooth. I guess I should clarify- no adding events or notes (which would have been one of my primary uses of it). Now it's just an expensive ipod. I'm new to apple and I'm still settling in with it, but this seemed like a rip off to me. I cancelled my order for one two days ago and still bummed. I can't change over to the iphone. So I guess I'll spend my money elsewhere.
Posted by: Hedy at September 12, 2007 01:31 PMI know the Touch doesn't have the Google Maps application, but does anyone know if you can still use Safari to access Google maps or any other map place?
Posted by: Lynsey at September 12, 2007 05:02 PMIt's the coolest mp3 player ever! I definitely need it!

Mr. Gates, stop trolling.
Posted by: kstar at October 9, 2007 08:27 PMI recently picked up an iPod touch and I really like this gadget so far. The video is great (the widescreen is much nicer to watch movies on) and the built in browser is very intuitive. I'd definitely recommend the iPod touch to someone with free time and money to spend!
Posted by: Jen at November 22, 2007 09:56 AMPersonally I am stoked about Apple opening up the iPod touch and iPhone to third party applications, it might make the whole thing more linux friendly eventually.
