Apple says OS X 10.5 delay is iPhone's fault
Either it is unprecedented honesty or the biggest bald-faced fib I've ever seen come out of a high tech company.
Apple claims that Leopard, OS X 10.5 will be delayed on account of the iPhone.
In a statement on its Web site it says in part. "we had to borrow some key software engineering and QA resources from our Mac OS X team, and as a result we will not be able to release Leopard at our Worldwide Developers Conference in early June as planned."
If it is true I can't imagine the marketing and PR departments at Apple being very happy. What is the message Apple is sending out here?
The message says we're not as big a company as you think we are and we can't chew gum and walk at the same time. Not exactly the kind of stuff that inspires confidence.
Again, if it is true, let's look at the second message it is sending.
Apple is saying that it is more important to live up to the promise of a ship date for a new product that has an unknown market value with an unknown number of new users in favor of its comining in on time with a better OS for its multi-millions of current users.
Who is more important here?
Well, obviously, Apple figures that Mac users are a captive audience so let them wait. But the faint sounds of the cash register ringing in the distance for an entirely new market of Apple users has them willing to turn their back on the current customer base.
Finally, if it is not true, it's right up there with "my dog at my homework," "we can't find the emails," and "I don't know how we lost fifteen minutes of tape in the middle of a recorded conversation."
This industry never ceases to amaze me. It will be interesting to see whether or not by Monday afternoon some Apple official announces the all time favorite, "I misspoke."

Oh you are lame. OSX is fine. There is obviously alot of hidden stuff in Leopard that Apple hasn't let out of the bag yet. It's fine if they delay it to release it as a QUALITY product as opposed to Microsoft's offerings.
iPhone is the most advanced piece of technology to date. It's fine, leave it alone. Quit your bitching.
Posted by: Nanog at April 15, 2007 11:49 AMHate to say this...but I agree with the other comment. The comment to quality in the software industry is horrible. As a recent switcher, I have been amazed at the quality of OS 10.4. It is an elegant system, with unsurpassed security and reliability in a non-server OS.
Posted by: Sam at April 15, 2007 02:55 PMVery disappointing news. I'm sure this means iworks 07 will also be delayed. This forces me to obtain MS Ofice for Mac which really goes against my grain. For once I wanted a MS free computer. I can not wait much longer for Apple to give us the tools we neeed.
Posted by: Dave at April 15, 2007 04:51 PMThis is sooo funny
They played up Msofts delay of Vista, and now they delay their own product. Hilarious
Apple doesn't have to rush to put out Leopard because their current OS doesn't need a quick fix. Apple continually puts products out that WORK! I know colleagues that are still working on older Mac OS systems because they work too. On the other hand, Windows users are always waiting for the new OS system to come out, hoping that their computers will finally stop crashing.
I feel that Apple's approach to this announced delay is refreshingly honest. As a stockholder I am anxiously awaiting the iPhone and am perfectly content with my current OS system, because IT WORKS!
I believe Apple made the right move. OS X works fine, and, as an aapl shareholder, want an on time iphone launch. Good call, Mr. Jobs
Posted by: Greg at April 15, 2007 08:20 PMTiger works fine. The iPhone has been in speculation for a very long time. Jobs says he had been waiting for this moment for 2 and a half years. I look forward to Leopard but I want a smart phone that WORKS as well as my MAC does. I am tired of the constant crashing and lockups in my current "Smart" Phone.
If you havent noticed there is much more riding on the success of the iPhone than there is on Leopard.
Posted by: John at April 15, 2007 11:07 PMwell ive had it with mac, i was going to get a new ibook, since my old one just decided to hate me and stop working.I need it for work and im not going to get one and have to upgrade the OS when it comes out a month later ive already waited to long. Vista PC here i come. Ive played with my friends and it aint so bad. Im not one to buy into the propaganda against Vista, im pretty open minded when it comes to any pc. people that feel the need to diss another company while stating their opinion give all of us a bad name.
Posted by: macinlove at April 16, 2007 12:30 AMI think this can be a problem for most of the iphone Fans. They don´t want to to buy the first iPhone Version, because the next iPhone Version will be much better. But also i think there are enough Apple "hardcore" Fans on 11.06.2007 for the iphone release in usa...
Posted by: Martin at April 16, 2007 12:56 AMAll these articles I've been seeing since Apple made their announcement seem to assume that we Mac users are out here waiting patiently for Leopard, as if we are unable to move forward without it. Let me tell you: 99.99% of all mac users could care less whether Leopard arrives tomorrow or in October. When it gets here, it will work. We will install it and look at the new features and go "wow, that's cool," and that will be the end of it. We only upgrade to stay current with our applications, which may or may not require upgrading the OS to install their latest programming bells and whistles.
The press has made too much out of this. WAAAYYY too much. It's a non-issue. Seriously.

I agree it is a non-issue in the sense that a few months delay is not that significant. But it is the excuse they came up with for the delay that is so odd. That is the reason I felt it was worth commenting on.

You missed a possibility: maybe, it is somewhere in between.

I agree 100% with the first comment. quality is what matters.
