HP debuts AMD-based laptop for SMBs
Hoping to capitalize on the growing interest among SMBs looking to buy mobile computing solutions, Hewlett-Packard on Wednesday unveiled a low-end notebook system using AMD's 64-bit chip, along with a new product bundle and education program for those resellers mainly catering to SMBs.
Fueled by AMD's Trion 64 mobile chip, the HP Compaq nx6125 Notebook PC is priced at just under $1,000 and includes the company's Biometric Fingerprint Sensor, wireless LAN connectivity, a 15-in display, ATI's Radeon Xpress200M, the DirectX 9 chipset, and a three-year warranty.
Besides the Biometric Fingerprint Sensor, other security features of the system include an optional integrated Smart Card Reader, and HP's Credential Manager, which provides a single sign-on password solution eliminating the need to remember multiple passwords.
HP officials contend they have improved the battery life of the new system by adding AMD's PowerNow power management technology, and by offering an optional travel battery.
In a recently released study market researcher IDC reported that sales of notebook systems among SMBs grew at 24 per cent year over year for the first quarter of 2005.
“We think small and mid-size businesses are clearly the sweet spot within the mobile market and being untethered from the office provides a competitive advantage by enabling workers to access critical business information when and where they need it,” said Kevin Gilroy, worldwide senior vice president and general manager, Small and Medium Business, HP.
Along with the new system HP also unveiled its Smart Mobility Access Program, to aid its resellers and business partners selling locally to SMBs. The product bundle includes Microsoft's Small Business Server, HP's Proliant server, a choice of mobile devices ranging from the HP iPAQ hand held computers to HP Compaq notebooks and a number of options including network printers and a wireless network for the office.
In a third announcement HP debuted a lightweight digital projector called the HP mp2200, which weighs in at 2.4 lbs. The unit has multiple inputs that allow a user to connect a notebook, DVD camcorder, VCR or HDTV.
