Dell Targets SMBs With First Dual Core Server
Dell underscored its technology commitment to smaller companies on Monday shipping its first server containing Intel's dual-core processor that will enable them to run multiple applications significantly faster.
The new PowerEdge SC430, which carries a $499 price tag for the entry level model, has approximately 50 per cent more storage capacity and 50 percent more high-speed PCI Express I/O slots than its immediate predecessor the PowerEdge SC420. The system will be bundled with Dell's collection of management utilities and professional services.
Company officials said they will position the system to smaller companies as being best suited for applications involving e-mail, file and print serving, and shared Internet access. They claimed the system can be easily deployed and managed by smaller shops looking to upgrade their existing peer-to-peer networks or for those looking to install their first geernal purpose server.
Technical features of the PowerEdge SC430 include the choice of a 2.53GHz Intel Socket-T Celeron, 2.8/3.0GHz Intel P4 Prescott, or 3.0/3.2GHz Intel Pentium D dual-core processor, up to 4 gigabytes of DDR-2 SDRAM, optional SATA drives or U320 SCSI drives, and an optional Travan TR-40 or DAT72 tape backup.
Dell plans to offer Microsoft's Windows® Small Business Server (SBS) 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) with the new system. The systems will also support Microsoft's Windows Server 2003, and versions of the Linux operating system distributed by Red Hat and SuSe Linux.
In terms of available services, users can buy the Custom Network Installation Assessment designed to help them develop an appropriate technology strategy tailored for small business environment. They can also the more advanced Technical Support services that can help small businesses accelerate deployment and maximize of their system.
Company officials said they will also help small business customers recycle their old technology with its recycling services at the end of the lifecycle. More information on this service can be seen at visit www.dell.com/services.
