A New SMB Podcast

We've got a new SMB IT podcast up, and it's a good one, with an interview covering questions about the value of a security information manager (SIM) for the small business space. It's a paradox, really: small businesses are most likely to need the help that a SIM can provide with event correlation and expert advice, yet many people feel that the SMB network is too small to benefit from a SIM's power. As I talk to SIM vendors, I hear that they're interested in moving "down market", from the large enterprise to the SMB, and I suspect we're going to start seeing more and more products that are aimed at the 200-seat and less network segments.

There's plent more to come, but until then you can listen to the podcast here.

A New Year's Podcast

Welcome to a new year of SMB IT. I'm going to start the year with the first episode in a new series of podcasts. My plan is for the podcasts to be weekly affairs with news of SMB IT products and issues along with interviews of vendors, service providers, and small-business IT professionals. Let me know what you think -- I want the podcast to be useful, informative, and enjoyable -- more the physician-prescribed glass of merlot than the heaping bowl of Prune-bran for your health.

In this week's episode you'll hear industry news and an interview with Garrett Fortune of Workflow.com.

InfoWorld LIVE! Episode 14

After two weeks of reruns due to vicious evil scheduling problems, we managed to get another original episode in the can. This time we're talking about SMB backup trends as they pertain to online backup services. There's been an explosion in these services over the last year --does this spell the end of tape for SMBs? We answer that with interviews with the CEO of BitLeap and the Sr. VP of Product Development for eVault.

InfoWorld LIVE! #3: Storage for 2007

Episode 3 of InfoWorld LIVE! is up for download. This week, we're doing a storage-oriented show, beginning with Iomega, moving to Zetera and finishing up with a short talk by our own Brian Chee on storage virtualization for SMBs.

And in case you missed the first two episodes, this is a pilot of a one-hour weekly radio show hosted by myself and Scott Draughon, who heads up the My Technology Lawyer resource site and radio show. We're hitting technology and business issues, talking about the inner workings of InfoWorld and making fun Brian and Paul.

And looking for sponsors.

New Radio Show: InfoWorld LIVE! Episode 2

It's episode 2 of InfoWorld LIVE! and wouldn't you know it, she falls smack dab on Vista day. So to celebrate this august occasion, we've got Microsoft's lead Vista product manager, Greg Sullivan as our first guest. Then we also have JC Utter of infrastructure maker ImageStream talking about CALEA (scary) and finally InfoWorld's own Martin Heller getting into his recent review of Cast Iron.

Remember, InfoWorld LIVE! is a new weekly radio show manned by me and our pals over at My Technology Lawyer. We're in pilot mode now, so it's only running for 6 weeks unless we find a sponsor (marketing people take note!). My co-host, as ever, is tech attorney Scott Draughon and we spend an hour talking to vendors, IT folks and technology business executives about technology developments, market situations and even legal prognostications in the SMB space.

The show is on every Tuesday at 4:00pm-5:00pm EST, so tune in by heading to the My Technology Lawyer site (link above) and clicking on the radio show icon on the bottom right. From there, you can stream the show live. Or you can wait a bit and I'll post a link to it here every week.

New Radio Show: InfoWorld LIVE!

Apparently my voice isn't as grating as it sounds to me. I've just managed to get a gig as co-host of a weekly one-hour radio show in conjunction with the folks at the My Technology Lawyer Radio Show.

This week, we've got InfoWorld senior contributing editors Paul Venezia and Brian Chee. Paul is going to try and talk about virtualization to mere mortals while Brian is going to discuss security considerations for SMBs in 2007. We've also got High Mobley, co-founder of q!Bang Solutions talking about search engine optimization. You can download this episode by clicking on this link:   Listen!

Hey, I could have been on time, but that tryptophan is a killer. So once I woke up and gathered my wits, I put together this episode. First we hit how to analyze your web site's traffic. Then, I get to site a few examples of how not to take technology too far.    Listen!

More Oliver on Internet Radio

groupies.jpg

I get the feeling that my Emerging Enterprise podcasts have become massively popular. I'm suddenly getting seated in restaurants ahead of the line, I'm ordering food that's not on the menu and groupies are throwing their underwear at me wherever I go. It's fantastic...up until I wake up as me again.

But in case you do like the EE podcasts, I've got six weeks of more Internet radio at the My Technology Lawyer Internet radio show. I'll be having a segment with MTL's host, attorney Scott Draughon, about SMB technology and business issues every Thursday for the next six weeks (excepting next Thursday, due to Turkey Day, of course).

You can download or stream my first segment here.
