Wi-Fi Signal that Travels 60 Miles?

Intel has reportedly created a Wi-Fi setup that spans up to 60 miles. While this is music to the ears of any tech trekker, it won't be available for the likes of you and me. Rather, the company plans to implement it in developing markets--for example, rural villages that aren't wired at all. Another factor that makes the setup tailored for these markets is its low-cost: these towers would cost several hundred dollars apiece, while WiMax towers will cost several thousand.

It does make me wonder if the FCC would allow this use since 802.11 is using unlicensed spectrum. Naturally other countries do their own thing.

Hard to read between the lines of the press release, as usual, but it looks like they are doing high gain antennas at both ends with a repeater at the remote site. (You need a repeater because 30 dB is a lot of pringle cans.) Out in the boonies interference would be minimal. WiMax uses a high power transmitter but no repeaters. So users don't need high gain antennas.
