Microsoft releases RC1 of Vista
It's official: Microsoft has made Release Candidate 1 of Windows Vista available to its beta testers. According to an entry in the Windows Vista Team Blog, Microsoft Platforms and Services Co-President Jim Allchin marked the occasion with an e-mail message to the TechBeta and TAP Test community saying "We could not have achieved this milestone without your support. The quantity and quality of feedback and data we received from you has been essential to helping us progress." RC1 will be released to a broader audience next week via MSDN and TechNet, and ISVs will be able to use this build of Vista to certify their applications, Allchin said in the message.

Pre-RC1 is running beautifully on my 32-bit box. I can't wait to see if driver and software compatibility has improved for RC1 64-bit.
Posted by: Chris at September 1, 2006 01:52 PMVista even in RC1 is turning out to be the best commercially available OS (period)… There are improvements ground up, there is something for everyone. Whether you are a hot rod DJ getting your groove on with MP3 ripping or video editing, a soccer mom trying to ensure safety of your kids in cyber world with parental control, a business user utilizing collaboration and self restore/healing features or an IT Pro with tons of security, management, apps deployment needs…
I hope MS does not delay the launch any further and distribute this thing of beauty to the masses ASAP.

Omer Qureshi
Decided to install RC1 on a newly formatted NTFS drive. Bad idea! RC! didn't see my sata drive nor would it accept drivers for it.So I installed a fresh XP Pro with updates. RC! installed as an upgrade with a few grumbles. As is known, wouldn't accept Norton Security 06, Spysweeper, Diskeeper and so on. At this stage I would have to buy a new scanner and printer along new apps. Eventually installed completely. Looks pretty. Much slower than XP at booting. So, as a home user, it seems I'd have to spend a lot more than the cost of Vista on apps and hardware. Despite all the excitement, I'll be staying with XP Pro (which still needs updates monthly) now that it's matured. Will wait until the new baby is out of diapers!
