iPhone shortage fuels rumors of imminent 3G phone

Times are tight all around, and iPhone resellers are not exempt. While the people who try to turn a dollar buying up and reselling Apple's mobile phone are suffering under the current shortage of iPhones, there is a surplus of rumors about an imminent new model from Apple.

According to this Business Week article, the shortage could be an indication that Apple, who historically tightens its inventories of devices 60 to 90 days before a new model's launch, is gearing up to introduce the next iPhone iteration.

The New York Times fuels speculation about the possibility of an iPhone with the ability to connect to faster 3G networks. And analyst Gene Munster weighs in with the opinion that there is an "80 percent chance that a new version of the iPhone is coming earlier than anticipated."

cNet describes the delicate position Apple is in, gearing up for a 3G iPhone launch: "The problem with announcing [a new iPhone] first and shipping it later is that iPhone sales could screech to a halt in the weeks, or maybe months, until the 3G model is ready."

Of course, speculation about missing iPhones have been a staple feature of the iPhone hype for some time. Meanwhile keep your eyes peeled for clues to what -- and when -- Steve Jobs has in store for the iPhone.

Most iPhone buyers are existing Apple customers

Own an iPhone?

Then chances are pretty good that you're satisfied with that device, at least according to Rubicon Consulting and its survey of U.S. iPhone users, which determined that 75 percent of respondents are experiencing "very high levels of satisfaction."

Chances are pretty strong, too, that you were already one of the Apple devout. You know, already a fan of the company, had a Mac, an iPod and were part of the Apple installed base. That's another 75 percent to match, Rubicon says.

The phone's popularity may play a role in the iPhone shortage that The New York Times is reporting today -- though that could also indicate that "a new version of the iPhone is coming earlier than anticipated."

But while one quarter of respondents indicate that it's displacing a notebook PC, a full one-third said they carry a second phone right along with the iPhone.

What's more, Apple's market-expanding device drives annual phone bills up some $228.

One company that benefits from that, of course, is AT&T; the carrier's gross service revenue increased by about $2 billion per year, Rubicon explained.

So, the question remains: If you own an iPhone, were you already an Apple disciple, or did the handheld convert you?

Nokia N96 pictures leaked to Net

Corporate ploy to steal iPhone pulpit thunder from Steve Jobs' pre-Macworld 2008 or some kind of Think Smart-esque Nokia lawsuit in the making, who cares?

I mean, is that a Carl Zeiss lens?

That's right, leaked photos of the forthcoming Nokia N96 smartphone are available for drooling over on the Net. And this, only a few days after the first Android prototype was spotted in the wild.

Of course, until fruition, such toys remain figments. In the meantime, there's always Tom Yager's comprehensive smartphone comparison to help you make the most practical tide-me-over choice.

As for the iPhone, which Yager declared the $1,975 iPod in his July InfoWorld Test Center review, the six-month mark has InfoWorld colleagues Kevin Railsback and Eric Hill waxing familiar on this year's gadget darling -- check out Two geeks and an iPhone Part 2 and Part 3 for their deep-dive video foray into the functionality of the iPhone six months since their first-look Two geeks and an iPhone Part 1.

Railsback, who has already MS Exchange-ified head honchos' iPhones, knows a thing or two about the impact of mobile devices worming their way into the enterprise. And with Avaya's announcement that it will bring its one-X Mobile platform to the iPhone early next year, the din from execs clamoring for IT iPhone support will only grow louder.

Whatever you do in 2008, don't step into the personal iPhone support jockey role at your enterprise uninformed. After all, mobile workers – and those bringing unsanctioned devices into the enterprise, in particular -- continue to be a top security concern.

iPhone: Finger-lickin' good?

I'll come full clean here that I have just ordered a Moto Q, and will receive it the day of iPhone's launch.

How can it be? Pogue and Mossberg may have learned how to use, and be able to look beyond the touchscreen-based input for all things iPhone, but I see it in a different light.

I'd be willing to swipe my fingers across this beautiful new gadget, if the world were a cleaner place and I did not have two young boys.

In response to me explaining to a colleague that I would not buy one for technological reasons -- lack of EVDO/HSDPA/3G connectivity, expansion card or even a carrier that is reasonably priced (Sprint has unlimited EVDO data plans for $15 a month) -- she said:

"iPhone looks pretty to me. That's about the extent of my knowledge."

And agreed. It is a beautiful piece of design work. And not everyone needs more than a status symbol with e-mail and iTunes.

But how about when you get a call while eating an Al Pastor burrito (elbow deep in salsa with a chip in the other hand)? So much for the million-dollar, Prada-killer finish.

No way am I keeping a truckload of KFC wipes at hand just to keep up with the elite iPhone-set, with their freshly chamoised tech nuggets.

I'll keep my screen free of pork grease with the Moto Q's BlackBerry-like scrollwheel -- and get my e-mail pushed and EVDO internet for $15 a month to boot.

Think about it. Is the iPhone the finger-lickin' all-in-one gadget you had in mind?

My colleague: "Hmmmm. Sounds kinda good, actually. But being seen licking one's phone wouldn't be good for one's reputation ... And would probably damage the phone."

Exec explains Apple-Cisco iPhone interoperability

Exec explains Apple-Cisco iPhone interoperability
In the previous chapter of the iPhone Saga, Apple and Cisco had agreed to put aside their differences and attornies and instead share the coveted iPhone name -- and work toward iProduct interoperability.

That was all well and good, except it left some people scratching their heads, wondering just what "interoperability" might mean between the Apple iPhone, which is a iPod/cell phone crossbreed, and the Cisco iPhone, which is a telephone handset designed for use on a VOIP network.

Well, Cisco Chief Development Office Charlie Giancarlo shed some light on what that interoperability might look like in a recent interview, according to reports. "Cisco wants the Apple iPhone to work with its corporate phone systems, Giancarlo said. A partnership would allow users to get the same services, such as instant messaging and teleconferencing, on their Cisco desk phones and Apple iPhones," Bloomberg reports.

Apple, meanwhile, has remained mum on the subject, perhaps still suffering painful memories from the last time it let a certain cat out of the bag.
