A conversation with Andy Singleton about building global teams

For today's Friday podcast I got together with Andy Singleton. I've known Andy for a long time. Back in 2003 I brought him in to help with a feature story on the globalization of software development -- in particular, for his thoughts on the dynamic assembly of global teams that can wield open source componentry.

More recently, at Assembla.com, Andy's put together an application called Breakout that aims to package up the approach he's developed and embed it in a professional network.

Early on in the conversation I mention Yochai Benkler's Wealth of Networks which is a book, a wiki, and a downloadable PDF. By way of Judd Antin, who collaborates with Ben Hill on the Mycroft project discussed in an earlier podcast, I also recently found Joseph Hall's recording of a recent talk by Benkler. It's a fascinating analysis of the social and economic trends that are fueling decentralized production not only of software, but of all cultural artifacts.

Update: Transcript available.
