A conversation with John Schneider about Efficient XML

John Schneider, the CTO of AgileDelta and the driving force behind E4X, is now evangelizing Efficient XML, an alternate binary syntax for XML. In today's podcast we discuss the motivations for this proposed W3C standard, its theoretical foundations, and its uses.

There have been various binary XML proposals in recent years. It's a somewhat controversial idea, and I haven't paid close attention to the discussion, but at a high level John's pitch sounds reasonable to me. If an alternate binary representation of XML can be managed under the covers, side-by-side with conventional XML in a way that's transparent to existing XML-aware tools and APIs, then a myriad of memory- or bandwidth-constrained devices and applications can leverage those familiar tools and APIs.
