I/O and storage importance in a virtual environment

The whole notion of I/O in a virtual environment is becoming less and less of a mystery as more people are starting to realize that virtualization takes a hefty toll on the I/O of a system. Consumers will typically see this as they standardize on larger systems in order to achieve higher densities. At the same time, part of the important component of virtualization and I/O is the storage side itself.
